Where Mistakes Usually Happen in a Renovation
-
Don’t be in a rush! Choose materials early on. Many times the schedules of contractors and tradesmen determine time frames. It is important to be ready to avoid mistakes and/or the feeling, “I would have chosen something else had there been more time.” If this is overwhelming, we are happy to aid you in selections of tile, carpet, windows, etc.
-
Take necessary time to develop and explore lay outs and construction plans (possibly 6 months or more.)
-
In designing layouts, ideally walk ways are 4 ft, but probably not smaller than 3 ft. This includes space around groupings of furniture to avoid traffic jams!
-
Avoid unforeseen stress and complications! Consider time, energy, and money equally when planning a renovation and/or decorating (often money is the only consideration.)
-
Simplify tile choices. There are lots of options, it can be easy to over complicate a bathroom or kitchen. Each space can only afford one bold tile, so if you choose a bold tile, make all the other tile choices simple.
-
It takes more time to get the job done when people are living in the space, creating delays and higher labor costs. There is a lot of circling back when all the work could’ve been done at once. If possible move out!
-
Choose wall color last, after rugs, tile, floors, cabinets, furniture, etc. It is easy to choose a wall color to fit what already exists. It is harder to make furniture, tile, rugs fit to a wall color.
